The Impact of School Libraries on Student Learning

The library is the largest untapped instructional resource in many schools.  Studies in over 20 states and one Canadian province demonstrate that strong library programs (ones with qualified librarians, solid collections that support the curriculum and the reading interests of the school, and regular collaboration between the school librarian and classroom teachers) positively impact student learning.  This research was summarized this spring by students in a graduate course at Mansfield University and is available at http://libweb.mansfield.edu/upload/kachel/ImpactStudy.pdf.  As school librarians, we should share the findings of these research studies with administrators, teachers, and parents.  It is important that we leverage our library programs to support student learning and that the expectation be in place that we do so.
